Risk Management in Healthcare: Case Study

Risk Management in Healthcare: Case Study Harry C. Abellana Jr. Introduction I am a health care assistant going on duty at North Shore Hospital. It is one of the hospitals under the Waitemata District Health Board. It caters inpatient and outpatient care. It is also equipped to perform surgeries and emergency care. Studying risk management is a very important key in being a manager. This would equip you with the vital skills and mind set to be sensitive to identify the different risks in the work place. You will be able to act quickly and find a solution if ever a problem is faced. All of your clients or patients are your responsibility. Their care is in your hands. Purpose of Risk Management Working at North Shore Hospital is a very eye-opening experience. The hospital caters to everyone and attends to any type of illness. With the vast patients that they are attending, risk is always present. An accident or wrong practice always lurks the corner. I can see that the purpose of risk management is to prevent and control the different risks being faced on a day-to-day basis. Without risk management, there will be chaos in the organisation and this will hinder the staff to do their work. Proper risk management is implemented so that the organisation itself can do their tasks efficiently and effectively. Benefits of Risk Management There are different things that North Shore Hospital is benefiting from their effective risk management. First is a good reputation. They have a good reputation of being one of the best public hospitals under the Waitemata District Health Board. This was achieved through proper planning and execution of their risk management protocols. Another benefit is maximizing the time and skills of the staff. Whenever there is a risk encountered, the staffs already know the steps on how to handle and solve the problem. Another is conserving and saving money. If the risk is attended to or moreover prevented from happening, this would lessen the downtime and resources to be used to control the problem. That is why risk management is truly beneficial at North Shore Hospital. The Different Components of Risk Management Activities and Internal Environment The working culture at North Shore Hospital is a very positive one. Each unit exhibits team work to get the job done. All of the healthcare staff works hand-in-hand to provide the best quality healthcare. The managers make sure that a safe and healthy working environment is maintained. Any misunderstanding should be sorted out immediately. It is the responsibility of the managers to take care of their employees. On the other hand, the employees are responsible for their patients. The nurses and healthcare assistants are the first line of the organisation to take care of the clients. They use both modern technology and trusty hand-written documents to store patient’s information. Computers are mainly used to guide the healthcare providers regarding the medication schedule and as a communication tool. This will lessen the occurrence of medication errors. They use the traditional patient’s chart to jot down objective observations like blood pressure, temperature, respirato ry and heart rate. The organisation has plotted down their policies that would cover all risk possibilities that they may encounter. There are policies from the simplest thing like hand washing techniques up to the complicated things like medication error. They also give importance regarding the confidentiality of the patients. They always remind us that every time you perform basic care to the patients, you should make sure that all the curtains are closed and not to expose the clients. New Zealand is a diversified country. With the continuous influx of migrants, there are a lot of culture, religion and beliefs. The healthcare plan should be sensitive to the rights and beliefs of the patient. The decision of the family is also respected when drafting the care plan for the patient. Objectives The basic objective of the Waitemata District Health Board, in which North Shore Hospital is under this health board, is to provide the best healthcare while respecting patient’s rights. They are committed to become a world-class healthcare facility. The organisation is aiming for a zero fall incident across all departments in all shifts. They are also an advocate to promote a smoke-free environment which should be achieved by the year 2024. They provide health teachings to patients who smoke and provide help and options on how to quit smoking. Proper hygiene, preventing cross contamination, limiting salt intake and recognizing the signs and symptoms of stroke are other objectives that the hospital is trying to disseminate to their patients. Their main objective is to promote a healthy lifestyle. Event Identification One of the risk identification that the hospital is doing is practicing emergency evacuation in case a major catastrophic event happens. They do this announced or unannounced. This is beneficial to remind the group on what to do in time of tragedies to be effective and efficient in evacuating the facility and save lives. Another current event that they are closely monitoring and trying to prevent is the spread of the Ebola virus. It has become a worldwide threat. They are specifically meticulous for those persons with or without signs of feeling sick to inform the organisation if they travelled to Africa or to any known country which has a positive case of the Ebola virus. If a person is suspected to have contracted this disease, they are to isolated for close monitoring and to be provided with the proper treatment. Risk Assessment Reference North Shore Hospital has a very simple yet very effective way to quickly inform the healthcare provider about the case of the patient. Posted on the wall on top or at the side of the patient is a reference chart. The chart consist information like name, age, language spoken, diet and nurse on charge for that shift. The unique thing about the chart is about the probability of the patient having a fall. It is measured by ticking the box if the patient is at high, medium or no risk of falling. There is also a picture of different walking assistive devices in which the proper tool to use is encircled. The picture helps a lot because it gives a clear picture not only by the name of the device. The chart also indicates if the patient is independent, needs supervision or how many persons should accommodate the patient if ever he or she needs assistance. This reference chart simply provides you the do’s and don’ts regarding the care of the patient. Response Plan Every shift always starts with a hand over. This is vital because in this occasion, all the information about the patient is being given. Each patient is unique in terms of providing care. The healthcare team also do rounds to check on the patients. There are times in which a patient needs close monitoring. The nurse cannot do this alone. They call the help of the bureau. This may be internal or external. This procedure will lessen the risk of the patient to incur any incident. They assign a staff to do a one-on-one monitoring of the patient. This may be an additional cost to the organisation but the positive effect always outweighs the monetary impact. This is also a way as a quick response to unexpected shortage of staff. The nurse managers on duty can always count on the bureaus to provide them with the manpower needed for that shift. The allocation of patients to the nurses on duty is also planned out. There are 2 or more nurses assigned in a single room. All the severe cases and patients who has complex care plan are distributed to the nurses. The buddy system works well in the healthcare system because there will be somebody to assist or help you in case a problem occurs. Each room generally consists of four patients. A single room cannot be occupied by all dependent patients. Occasionally there are two independent patients and two who needs close monitoring or supervision. Control Activities North Shore Hospital is equipped with all the modern risk managing devices like fire extinguishers, first aid kits and the likes. The expiry dates are checked regularly to maintain the effectivity of the devices. They also provide call bells to each patient. This will provide the patient easy access to the healthcare providers. The toilets are equipped with this feature. All over the floor there is an emergency bell. This would help alert all the healthcare staff that a major incident occurred. If the patient is not capable of pressing the call bell, they are attached to a monitoring alarm. If the patient gets up from bed, the alarm is triggered to alert the staff on duty that the patient needs help. Not only are the tools or the equipment being used are audited. The plans and protocols are also being updated from time to time. These plans are adjusted according to the flaws, if ever there are any, or new ideas and suggestions coming in that might be beneficial to the recent protocol s; all of the plans and materials being used to control or prevent risks are continuously changing or updating to be more effective it its goals. Information and Communication The hospital has good communication mediums to inform the staff and the general public about the health objectives. They use emails and online communications lines in order to inter act with each department. A paging system is used to announce any information that can be heard all throughout the facility. They also print out and post posters all over the facility. They are the appropriate size and clear. It contains the vital information that they want the people to know. It also contains call back information so that the public will have the chance to call them for questions and clarification. There are also leaflets and hand outs available. This is useful and handy. A patient can take these flyers with them and they can read it in their free time to better grasp the information being handed out. Help desk and information centre is also available. It is manned by a knowledgeable staff in which basic information can be answered right away. Monitoring Being a big hospital, it takes a group effort to maintain or prevent risks from occurring in the organisation. The company delegates to the members of the team the different aspects that need monitoring. They monitor cleanliness, fall incidents, cross contamination, intravenous lines infection and the likes. Each subject is randomly assigned to the members of the healthcare team for monitoring. They post the results of the evaluation at their bulletin board. The hospital makes it into a friendly competition. They commend the best ward for their efforts. This is a good way to motivate the crew to bring out the best performance and to provide the best care possible. Conclusion All organisations involving healthcare, may it be a hospital or a retirement village, has the best intention to their patients. They all have a common goal of taking care of people who lacks the ability to take care of themselves, may it be due to certain illnesses or old age. With the type of clientele that they have, risk is always present. That is why protocols are set to manage these risks. For me, the most important key is how to follow these protocols. They should be followed faithfully and put into practice. The organisation may have the perfect risk management procedures but without proper implementation, all of these would be useless. Recommendation This paper is very interesting. It varies from the typical subjects that were learned when taking the nursing course. It teaches us on what are the consequences if the different risks involved are not managed properly. Risk management should be inculcated to the practice of all employees, from the top management down to the rank and file. All should be responsible for their own actions because by being responsible risks can be prevented. We plan to become leaders and managers in the future. This would involve a lot more responsibilities. Mastering this talent will provide us with the proper knowledge, skill and attitude to become great leaders. Bibliography AOL Plc. (2014). It is always open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This would accommodate all potential customers even after the regular office hours. The store is still serving customers when the competition is closed. The size of the store, branding, and investing in the interior furbishing is also appropriate. This prevents congestion inside the pharmacy. The more relaxed the customers are; the better buying experience they will have. The parking slots are a bonus feature especially for those clients with cars who are in a hurry for a quick buy. They would spend the money they have to buy products in the store rather than allocating it to pay for parking. The variety of products being offered also gives customers wider products choices. Location is also suitable to cater the target market. Insurance Risk Running an all hours pharmacy is vulnerable to robbery, fire and medication error. The pharmacy should get an insurance plan to cover these identified risks since the pharmacy is always open. The shop is most at risk during night time in which most common mistakes occur maybe due to fatigue which would hinder the human senses. The pharmacy should also protect their employees in case something happens to them in the work place. They should be accredited to the Accident Compensation Corporation or ACC to free the company from shouldering any extra expenses from unforeseen events. Since the business involves three stakeholders, protecting their investments should also be protected. An investor’s insurance is beneficial when fixing the pharmacy’s assets especially when something goes wrong like a death of an investor or bankruptcy. Compliance Risk You need to comply with different permits in order to run a pharmacy as per New Zealand’s laws. The Licence to Operate should be obtained. The licensing body of New Zealand is the Ministry of Health. The staff should also be qualified and have the NZQA qualifications especially the nurses and the pharmacists. Las Vegas Resort Project

Project Final Lake Las Vegas Boardwalk Resort Tourism You are a member of a firm that specializes in the development of world-class resort hotels around various parts of the world. A client has hired your firm to create a report and recommendations for a new resort somewhere in the United States. Course Project Lake Las Vegas Boardwalk Resort Development planning A boardwalk signifies relaxation and ente rtainment. What better place to build a fabulous boardwalk entertainment village than in the tourist capital of America beautiful Las Vegas, NV, to be more specific, Lake Las Vegas. This is a lush lakeside retreat located only 15 minutes east of the famous â€Å"Las Vegas Strip. † It is surrounded by natural red rocks and borders the Lake Mead Recreational Park. Several other hotels have already graced this manmade lake along with two award winning golf courses, and gourmet restaurants and exquisite shopping. Currently, there are two lakeside parcels remaining with great fronta ge and access to the shops and golf as well as many aquatic activities including sailing, fishing, canoeing, and small boating. Development of the structure would be made through a partnership with Lake LasVegas LTD, the chief land owner within this region. We feel that with a strategic partnership with the land owner, in the form of a land lease, our overall build-out costs would be drastically reduced and would yield pleasant tax incentives for this form of business structuring. We aim to build a traditional boardwalk style entertainment center complete with amusement hub and retail shops to add to the atmosphere. We also are planning on building a freestanding roller coaster, Ferris wheel, and Merry-Go-Round to add in to the boardwalk theme. An artist rendering of our anticipated plans would look something like this. There were nearly 40 Million visitors to Las Vegas in 2012, bringing a total of $9. 5 Billion in gaming revenue to Clark County. These figures are poised to increase steadily through 2020 and this doesn't even take into consideration the added revenues from hotels, restaurants, and retail shops. We can bring a little slice of a vacation retreat and truly make this a desert oasis. Environmental impact The Greater Las Vegas Valley is located in southern corner of Nevada. It lies bounded on the west by several mountain ranges and drains a 1,564-square-mile watershed southeastward through Las Vegas Wash into Lake Mead. Lake Mead, was created hen in the 1930's the Hoover Dam, was built in a section of the Colorado River creating what is now the largest reservoir in the US. This reservoir receives water runoff from the Rocky Mountains throughout Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah. Lake Las Vegas is currently another manmade offshoot of Lake Mead and developed for the purpose of becoming a master planned community. The water used is diverted through piping upwards throughout the community for reasons such as usage in homes and business for drinking water as wel l as the reclaimed water is then used for landscaping golf courses as well as watering the additional plants and shrubbery n the region. As for the wildlife in the region, it has all been preserved as natural for the area. There is also an assortment of water fowl, which can be seen flying about the area due to the lush creation ot this oasis. Complete intrastructure nas already been developed and is awaiting further investment potential. The addition of our boardwalk entertainment complex would be a welcome fit to this existing lakeside resort town. Sociological impact Since its inception as a gambler's paradise, close to the Mecca of Los Angeles, CA back in the mid 1940's, Las Vegas has developed into more of a normal metropolis with a liberal attitude. The gambling, alcohol and partying has grown Las Vegas into a town with two sides; one with the entertainment â€Å"anything goes† attitude and the other where suburbia can flourish with schools, hospitals and regular employm ent.The Las Vegas Metro area now encompasses a population of nearly 2 million, and is still growing. IT has its economic downturns as the rest of the country also does, yet it seems to bounce back as much of the revenue coming through this area is transient from elsewhere. Las Vegas as of recently has developed into more of a family friendly location complete with Amusement theme parks, water parks and utdoor activities for children. It is this atmosphere we are tapping into, with our devotion to amusement and excitement with a boardwalk relaxing atmosphere.Economic feasibility and Market With the aforementioned nearly 40 million tourists last year bringing with them their 9. 5 Billion in gambling revenue, along with other spending capital it is only logical to use this location as a prime target location for our boardwalk concept. The tourism industry has recovered pleasantly from the most recent recession and Las Vegas has shot back into action with three additional planned themed resort casinos being built n or near the Las Vegas Strip within the next 5 years. The competition is booming and with it comes a necessity for action. The future expansion planning within the Las Vegas Area calls for additional development of highway roads, as well as further expansion of the current monorail system within the strip-downtown gambling corridor leaving more expansion available to the surrounding areas. Our Lakeside resort is begging for attention and we aim to Jump in first with our themed attraction. Management and maintenance Our boardwalk hotel is patterned after the popular Kemah Boardwalk Inn, located in Galveston TX.This regional attraction has been in operation since 1997 and is only growing in popularity with both Texas residents as well as visitors to the Galveston Bay. By comparison, the Kemah location has only 52 rooms and is more dependent upon seasonal tourist business, whereas our Lake Las Vegas location will be twice the size with over 115 rooms and the ability to remain busy with both tourists and locals alike all around the year. It is with this main difference as well as the addition ofa fully operational casino floor which will allow our operation to flourish and become prottable within the first 6-8 years. We see the necessity to have this run like a four star hotel but with the relaxed nature of a holiday theme park with a casino. For our purposes of this project we are leaning toward Harrah’s Management Company. Harrah’s has the experience and technical know-how to handle all aspects of this venture and we would be pleased to have them as a strategic alliance. As for the financials we have developed a nice breakdown which will follow, but to begin, we are creating a budget for a hotel with 115 rooms to cost in the neighborhood of $22 million, additionally we will purchase a Roller Coaster, Ferris w heel and Merry-Go Round to cost an additional $3 million and the boardwalk construction build-out of approximately $5 million. This will all be financed with competitive commercial rates at 8.5% interest rate amortized over 30 years, with a balance due in 5 years. This is a standard financial package available through most commercial banks. We anticipate the retail shops and food establishments to be leased out with a competitive lease based upon the size, and location of the shop as well as with an additional gross revenue % additive. This is also standard for commercial leases in this arena. We hope to garner at least two separate nationally competitive restaurant chains leaving a final place for an independent to keep us fresh. As for the shops, these will all be leased as a first-come first-serve basis and will be contingent upon fitting in with the established atmosphere. As you can see based upon our pro-forma figures there will be plenty of room remaining for additional revenue generation as well as for advertising. We also plan to pay of the underlying note quicker than the banks anticipate. This will save us thousands in financing and interest charges. We do not currently have any interesting in additional properties as this property will undoubtedly require future planning and development to keep the theme fresh and popular with the tourists.Landscape architecture and structural architectureAs for the design and layout of the building, an anticipated concept is located here. It will be a seaside structure with the balconies facing both the lake as well as the entertainment center. Every room will have a view of the activities below and the lake activities. The Roller Coaster and Ferris wheel will be placed directly adjacent to the boardwalk and the hotel as to not defray from the majestic view of the boardwalk. The first floor of the building however will be the shops and restaurants with patios jetting from them into the boardwalk for more of a seasid e feel. The lower portion closer to the Lake will hold the Merry-Go- Round as well as additional seating for live entertainment, whether it be musical groups or live performing magicians and street performers. However from the top of the Ferris wheel, we are anticipating views clear out to the city lights of Las Vegas and to include the â€Å"Strip.†Interior design and decorationThe interior and dà ©cor of the hotel will accompany that of the theme, it will be of a nautical feel with black and white portraits of classic carnival settings. Many of these carnival and boardwalk photos will be of the tourists home towns which will add to a sense of realism and personalization. Light blue or yellow and whitewash trim will be the main color scheme while allowing a sprinkle of color to pop where the exciting locations are to be showcased. The interior of the rooms will also be stylized to transport the guest to a seaside location where fun relaxation and entertainment will be abunda nt.We plan to have several aquariums located throughout the property where different sea creatures can complete the full package. Some of the fish we plan on bringing in would be from the west coast and much will be from the East Coast and Gulf of Mexico, we may even bring in some sharks to place in a tank behind the lobby bar. This will be simply to add to any realism of seaside adventure.

Final Project: Business Portfolio Presentation Essay

The following is a presentation of information about â€Å"Nick’s Mexican Restaurant†. I will be going into detail about certain things that matter within a business like the organization, potential legal or ethical issues, business culture, types of motivation, human resource management, technology, and operations and materials management. Introduction to Mexican FoodAlthough the restaurant will be mainly Mexican, the menu will also consist of several American dishes and sea food dishes like Caldo de Marisco (seafood soup) and other favorites. Business OrganizationNick’s Mexican Restaurant will be privately owned. Since it is I will be fully responsible for all debts and obligations related my business. First at hand will be the staff, I need to have enough staff to get my business going and have the customers satisfied. My employees will consist of servers, cooks, dishwashers, preps, host/hostess, and a member of management for the kitchen and the front to greet the customers. Always making sure my employees are happy and secure. Taking care of my teams who will in turn take care of our guests, resulting in increased profits. Potential Legal or Ethical IssuesAs far as ethics goes, I will not be doing anything that may be considered illegal nor will my employees†¦I will stress it as much as possible to obey the law and be as clean and neat as possible. Legally you can be sued for almost anything from having a dirty kitchen to a small crack on the parking lot floor. I will be having plenty of insurance and I will make sure my business follows and obeys all kinds of licensing law. I will make sure all tax laws and employment laws will be followed as well. All employees will be treated fairly and will always have the option of leaving if they want. Business CultureNick’s Mexican Restaurant will strive to develop the strongest culture in the business and to out execute our competition. We focus on quality staffing , controlling team turnover and increasing  employee and customer satisfaction. The restaurant will be created to occupy both Mexican and American atmospheres because being here in the Rio Grande Valley, people can’t get enough of good Mexican cooking and a great down-home atmosphere. The restaurant will overlook the down town area for a pleasant dining experience. It will consist of a fancy banquet room that will be used for private and cooperate events, along with a down home dining room that will have a cozy fireplace and hearth. The outside will demonstrate a traditional Mexican style home (stucco) with an orange color motif. Types of MotivationWhen it comes to making my employees happy, I will always strive for that. I have always said, â€Å"happy employees means happy customers†. I will offer several types of incentives to motivate my employees to have great customer service. As the customer is paying, I will offer them a â€Å"report card† sort of speak to fill out about the service they received. If the service was excellent with several comments on it, I will place one from each server at the end of the week and draw to see which will receive a cash prize that week. It is very important that the kitchen stays clean, I will inspect it every week and make sure everything is looking great, if so I will give the kitchen staff a cash prize as well. All this in order to keep my employees happy and wanting more. Human Resource ManagementThe best way to improve the business is to have proper human resource management. Helping employees with common training practice is the best way to achieve growth within the business. Having four to five employees to one trainer would be very beneficial. Since everyone will be trained in a certain way the company will expand fast. Pay and benefits need to be increased if we want employees to stay with the company. Several businesses are offering better pay and benefits; we must retaliate by offering good starting wages and benefits. Retirement and sick leave is some of the issues that need to be operational. Vacation time should be offered after six months of employment and medical leave as well. Pay increases would be done every six months if the employees are doing well instead of yearly. Doing all this will surely help employees determine if the company is worth their services. TechnologyThe restaurant will be able to accept debit/credit cards and any other types of payment. The cash registers will have the options of keeping track of all the sales and transactions that have taken place throughout the day. The employees will have electronic time cards†¦at the beginning of the shift they are to swipe in and the end of the day to swipe out. After every night has passed a report will be printed out so I could look over. Operations and Materials ManagementEvery part of management should have all the materials needed for their area. The kitchen management is in charge of making sure all materials are ordered and products are supplied. I would not want my customers to get upset when they order something on the menu and it is not available due to insufficient ingredients. The front manager is in charge of making sure all napkin holders are stocked and all cleaning supplies are in abundance. The front manager is also to make sure all menus are current and printed correctly, along with cash register paper and credit/debit card machine also have paper. Nick’s Mexican RestaurantWith all this careful planning, Nick’s Mexican Restaurant will surely be one of the most successful restaurants in the Rio Grande Valley. People will love to work with us and dine with us as we will offer the very best in wage and benefits as well as a great mixture of Mexican, American, and seafood dishes. Essay about Johnlewis.Com Christmas Advert Analysis

JohnLevis.com Advert analysis This one minute long advertisement focuses on people who are trying to find ideal gifts for the people they love and care about. John Lewis Christmas advert 2OO9 was focused on the joy of receiving gifts through the eyes of children, so this year they decided to try the opposite idea. Idea of this advert is to show the viewer how nice it is to give perfect gifts to the ones you care about, because the feeling you get when you give a gift to someone (and they like it) is just as great as when you receive a present. Genre: Love to the ones you care about. Romance – Possibly.
